Our Story

We Started XN Because Good Enough Wasn't

XN Car Detailing is run by two professional detailers who have spent over a year building a reputation across the Bay Area for meticulous work. We are not a call centre with a van fleet. When you book with us, one of us shows up.

We started XN because we kept seeing the same thing: people paying real money for a car that came back with swirl-marked paint from a tunnel brush, a wet interior, and dressing sprayed over dirty trim. The industry had quietly decided that fast was the same thing as good.

It isn't. A car that has been washed properly by hand looks different, and it stays looking that way longer. So we built the business around the opposite trade-off — fewer cars per day, done thoroughly, by people who actually care whether the door jambs are clean.

That is also why we are honest about what we don't do. We are a cleaning and protection service, not a paint shop. We will tell you plainly when something is outside what a detail can fix, instead of taking your money and hoping you don't notice.

How It Works

We Come to You — Or You Come to Us

🚘

At Your Home or Office

Most of our work happens in a customer's driveway or a parking space at work. We bring all the professional equipment and products with us. We do need an outdoor tap and a standard power outlet at your location — nearly every driveway and garage already has both.

🏠

Drop Off in Santa Clara

Live in an apartment, condo or townhome with no tap or outlet you can use? Bring the car to us at 1850 Warburton Ave, Santa Clara instead. This is what makes us workable for people whose HOA or building rules never allowed a mobile detail before.

📅

Or Just Keep It Maintained

Our monthly maintenance membership keeps a car that is already in good shape looking that way, at a lower price than booking one-off details. It is the cheapest way to never need a big correction in the first place.

Our Process

Why Hand Washing Actually Matters

Almost every scratch pattern people call “swirl marks” gets put there by the wash itself — a spinning brush, a dirty mitt, or a towel that picked up grit off the lower panels and then went back onto the hood. Our entire process is built to avoid that.

1

Wheels and tires first, with their own tools

Wheels are the dirtiest part of the car, so they get done before anything else and they get a dedicated bucket, brushes and mitts that never touch your paint. This is the single most common corner that gets cut, and it is why brake dust ends up scratching door panels.

2

Pre-rinse and foam before anything touches the paint

The loose grit comes off before a mitt goes near the finish. Less contact with dirt means less risk of putting scratches in while “cleaning”.

3

Hand wash with multiple clean mitts, pH-neutral shampoo

We work through several clean plush wash mitts rather than dragging one dirty mitt around the whole car, using a pH-neutral shampoo that will not strip existing protection. Never a machine brush, never an automatic tunnel.

4

Dried with clean plush microfiber

Fresh, soft microfiber — not a chamois that has been dragged over twenty other cars. Bay Area tap water is hard, so getting the car dry properly is what prevents the water spots people call “stains”.

5

Interior worked top-down, with the right tool per surface

Soft-bristle brushes for vents and seams, dedicated leather and upholstery products rather than one all-purpose spray on everything, glass done last so it stays streak-free. Dressing goes on clean trim, not over dirt.

6

Paint sealant to protect the result

A sealant is not permanent. It wears down with every wash, every rain and every week in the sun, so we top it back up on every visit rather than laying it on once and hoping it holds. We would rather set the right expectation than oversell it.

The Long Game

What Actually Happens to a Car Here

A car parked in the Bay Area is not sitting still. It is being worked on constantly, just slowly enough that you don't notice until the damage is already done. Almost everything we protect against falls into three categories.

☀️

Sun on the dashboard

Bay Area sun fades and cracks dashboards and interior trim. It happens gradually — the dash goes chalky, the colour flattens, and eventually the plastic splits along the top edge where it takes the most light. By the time a crack shows, the damage has been building for years.

💧

Water spots on glass and paint

Our tap water is hard. When a car dries in the sun instead of being dried properly, the minerals stay behind, and hard water spots etch glass and clear coat. Etching is not dirt. Once it is in the surface, washing does not take it out.

🌿

Contaminants sitting on paint

Bird droppings, tree sap and industrial fallout eat into clear coat within days, not months. Under sun they work faster. The whole job of a sealant is to give that contamination a layer to sit on instead of your paint — but a sealant wears down between visits, and once it has worn through it stops protecting anything. That is exactly why we top it back up every single visit instead of relying on the last one.

Our Standard

What We Do Differently

None of this is complicated. It is mostly a matter of using the right product on the right surface and coming back often enough that protection never runs out.

1

pH-balanced products only

Every shampoo and cleaner we use is pH-balanced for the surface it goes on. That matters because an aggressive cleaner strips the sealant off the paint along with the dirt — so the car leaves clean and unprotected, which is exactly the state we are trying to avoid.

2

Hand wash with clean microfiber, every time

Multiple clean plush mitts rather than one mitt for the whole car, fresh plush microfiber, and dedicated wheel tools that never touch paint. The car is dried by hand rather than left to air dry, which is what keeps hard water off the glass and clear coat in the first place.

3

Protection applied and reapplied on a schedule

This is the part that actually separates a maintained car from a clean one. Sealant wears down between visits, so we top it back up on every visit rather than laying it down once and calling it done. Protection that has worn through is the same as no protection at all.

4

UV protectant on dash, doors and trim

Interior surfaces get a UV protectant rather than a shine product. The point is to slow the fading and cracking the sun causes, not to make the dash look wet for a week.

5

No silicone-heavy dressings

We don't use silicone-heavy dressings. They leave surfaces greasy, they attract dust straight back onto the panel, and over time they dry out the plastics they were supposed to be conditioning. A properly dressed interior should feel clean and matte, not slick.

6

Nothing slick on steering wheels or pedals

Steering wheels, gear selectors and pedals get cleaned and left with grip. Anything you hold or stand on should never come back slippery. This is a safety thing, and it is non-negotiable for us.

The Difference

Maintained — Not Just Cleaned

Most cars in the Bay Area get one of two treatments: an automatic tunnel wash, or a proper clean once or twice a year when they finally look bad enough. Both leave the car unprotected for most of its life.

A car we maintain

  • Washed by hand, dried by hand, no spinning brush ever touches the paint
  • Sealant topped up before it lapses, so protection is continuous
  • Contaminants come off before they have days to sit and etch
  • UV protectant reapplied on the dash and trim on a schedule
  • Small problems get caught while they are still small

Tunnel washes & one-and-done cleaning

  • Spinning brushes drag grit across the paint, which is where swirl marks come from
  • Cars often leave still wet, so hard water dries on the glass and clear coat
  • Protection wears through between cleans and nothing replaces it
  • Contamination sits on the paint for weeks between cleans
  • By the time the car looks bad enough to book, some of the damage is permanent

This is not a claim about anyone else's workmanship — it is a claim about frequency and method. A car cleaned only when it looks dirty spends most of the year with nothing protecting it, no matter who cleaned it last.

Straight Answers

What We Do — and What We Don't

What we do

  • Hand wash, inside and out
  • Interior deep cleaning — carpets, upholstery, leather
  • Odour and stain treatment
  • Tire and wheel detailing
  • Window and interior glass cleaning
  • Paint sealant, topped back up on every maintenance visit
  • Full details on sedans, SUVs and trucks
  • Monthly maintenance memberships

What we don't

  • Ceramic coating
  • Paint correction or machine polishing
  • Scratch and swirl removal
  • Paint protection film or clear bra
  • Window tinting
  • Bodywork, dent removal or respraying

Plenty of shops will quote you for all of the above. We would rather be the detailer you trust than the one who took a deposit for something a detail cannot deliver. If your paint genuinely needs correction work, we will say so — and our job then is to keep it from getting that way again.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Who actually details my car?
The same two detailers who founded XN. We are not a franchise and we do not sub-contract your car out to whoever is available. When you book, you get the people whose name is on the business.
Do you come to me, or do I come to you?
Either. We are mobile first and most jobs happen at your home or office. We work from an outdoor tap and a standard power outlet at your location, which nearly every driveway and garage already has. If you live in an apartment, condo or townhome without access to those, you can drop your car with us at 1850 Warburton Ave in Santa Clara instead.
Do you wash by hand or use a machine?
Always by hand. Your paint never touches a spinning brush or an automatic tunnel. We work through multiple clean plush wash mitts rather than one mitt for the whole car, with pH-neutral shampoo and clean plush microfiber, and wheels get their own dedicated tools so brake dust never travels onto your paint.
What kind of cars do you work on?
Everything from a daily-driven Jetta to a Tesla Model Y to an Aston Martin. Every vehicle gets the same process and the same attention. We do not have a separate lesser service for ordinary cars.
Are you insured, and what if I am not happy?
We back every detail with a 100% satisfaction commitment. If something is not right when we finish, tell us before we leave and we will correct it on the spot. Our reputation in Santa Clara is worth far more to us than any single invoice.
How long does a detail take?
A maintenance clean is usually about an hour. A full detail on a sedan typically runs three to five hours depending on condition, and larger SUVs and trucks take longer. We would rather take the extra time than rush and leave something behind.
The Long View

Three Years From Now

Detailing gets sold as a one-off — something you book when the car has got away from you. We think that is the wrong way round, and it is the reason most cars age faster than they need to.

A car we maintain looks better in three years than one cleaned only when it looks dirty. Not because of anything dramatic on any single visit, but because the sun never got three uninterrupted months on an unprotected dashboard, the sap came off the same week it landed, and the water never dried on the glass.

That also tends to show up when you sell it. Scheduled maintenance holds resale value better than occasional cleaning — a buyer reads a clean, uncracked interior and unetched paint as a car that was looked after, because it was.

None of this makes a car immune to anything. Stone chips still happen, and so does life. What it does is stop the slow, avoidable damage — the kind that is entirely a function of how long a surface was left unprotected. That is the part we can actually control, so it is the part we have built the business around.
