Short answer: A quick exterior detail takes about an hour, an interior deep clean runs 2–3 hours, a full interior-and-exterior detail runs 3–5 hours, and our most thorough package (XN Black Full, with clay bar decontamination) runs 5–8 hours. Because it's mobile, the time happens in your driveway or office lot while you go about your day — there's no drop-off wait unless you choose our Santa Clara shop. Get a time estimate for your car.
It's the first question most people ask when they book: how long is this actually going to take? The honest answer is that it depends on the service — a quick exterior refresh and a full deep clean live on completely different timelines. Here's a realistic breakdown by service type, plus what makes any detail run faster or slower.
Typical detailing times by service
Every car is different, but these are realistic time ranges for a standard vehicle. Bigger SUVs and trucks, or cars that are especially dirty, sit toward the higher end. The chart below shows how the main service levels compare.
Exterior detail — around an hour
A hand wash, wheels and tires, glass, and a fresh paint sealant. This is the fastest service and the one people book most often for regular upkeep.
Interior deep clean — 2 to 3 hours
A full vacuum, every surface wiped, interior glass, and a deep clean of seats and carpet. Cars with kids, pets, or set-in messes take longer because the soft surfaces need more attention.
Full detail — 3 to 5 hours
Inside and out, combined. This is the sweet spot for most owners who want the whole car reset in one visit.
XN Black Full — 5 to 8 hours
Our most thorough package, adding a clay bar decontamination pass, paint sealant, and a deep clean of seats and upholstery. It's essentially a full reset, so it's the longest — and the one that makes an older car feel close to new again. See what each package costs for the full breakdown.
What makes a detail take longer
Two identical cars can take very different amounts of time. The biggest factors:
- Vehicle size — a three-row SUV or truck has far more surface area than a sedan.
- Condition — heavy dirt, pet hair, and set-in stains all add time.
- Service level — the more that's included, the longer it runs (see the chart above).
- Interior complexity — leather, deep carpet, and lots of nooks take more careful work.
With a mobile detail, the clock doesn't cost you your day. We come to your home or office, so the hours happen in your driveway while you work, relax, or run errands — no drop-off needed.
Why not faster? (Detail vs. car wash)
A drive-through wash takes ten minutes because it only rinses the outside. Detailing takes hours because it's done by hand, one section at a time, reaching everything a wash skips. That thoroughness is the entire point — it's what makes the results last weeks to months instead of days. We break down the full difference in mobile detailing vs. a car wash.
Planning your appointment
When you book, your quote confirms the expected time for your specific car and service so there are no surprises. Not sure which level you need? Our Bay Area pricing guide pairs each service with what it includes. We serve Mountain View and the wider Bay Area, and we bring everything to you.
The products we actually use
Every car is washed by hand with a pH-neutral Chemical Guys shampoo, using two buckets with grit guards so the dirt you just removed never goes back onto the paint. Wheels get their own dedicated bucket, brushes and cleaner that never touch the bodywork — brake dust is abrasive, and one shared mitt is how most swirl marks start.
Protection is a Meguiar's or Gyeon paint sealant, which lasts around three months in Bay Area conditions and gives the surface something to sacrifice to UV, sap and hard water instead of your clear coat. To be clear about what that is and isn't: a sealant is protection, not a paint-resurfacing service. We don't offer coatings, mechanical buffing, or scratch-removal work — if that's what your paint needs, we'll tell you honestly rather than sell you a wash.
Car Detailing Time FAQ
How long does a full car detail take?
A full interior-and-exterior detail on a typical car usually takes about 3 to 5 hours. Our most thorough package, XN Black Full, adds clay bar decontamination and a deeper interior clean and can run 5 to 8 hours. A quick exterior-only service is often done in around an hour.
Why does car detailing take so long?
Detailing is done by hand, one section at a time, so it reaches places a quick wash never touches — decontaminating paint, cleaning wheels and glass individually, and deep-cleaning every interior surface. The thoroughness is exactly what makes the results last, and it's what separates a detail from a car wash.
Do I have to wait while my car is detailed?
Not with a mobile detail. Because we come to your home or office, you can go about your day while the work happens in your driveway. There's no drop-off needed, and no second trip to pick the car up.
